TeMaTe Institute for Black Dance and Culture
TeMaTe Institute for Black Dance and Culture is a Detroit-based 501-c3 social justice arts organization using dance as a tool for community engagement. TeMaTe preserves and passes on classical African dance traditions across the diaspora through weekly classes, performances, bookings and an annual convening for dancers, drummers, thought leaders and cultural workers. Anansi Hayes Media led a full rebuild of TeMaTe’s visual identity and web presence using our STORY framework, grounding the brand in the institute’s values and lineage. TeMaTe takes its name from a joyful dance of the Yacouba and Whêbe people of the Ivory Coast, and the brand carries that spirit of celebration and connection. The logo itself is based on the “Afronik” font created by Zimbabwean type designer Tapiwanashe Sebastian Garikayi, who crafting fonts for Afrikan writing systems. Like the name itself the palette of vibrant plum and yellow is inspired by the Ivory Coast’s Kente weaving. The website is as vibrant and dynamic as the organization itself with dance videos and motion, regular updates of weekly class sign-ups, performance booking, convening registration, donations, a shop, a blog and a newsletter. Since the new brand launched, TeMaTe has seen growing media visibility, new partnerships and increased attendance at its events and classes. Anansi Hayes Media is proud to continue it's ongoing design and web support for TeMate Institute.
